It prompted me to institute several big changes to my computer set-up/practices. Some of the information I found seemed so genuinely protective and comparatively little-publicized that I thought it might be worthwhile to pull together some of the better sites that I had perused and put them in a new Fatwallet thread.Due to the large amount of the material available regarding internet privacy, the many aspects to privacy that one can be made aware of and can take action on, and the varying situations, exposure tolerances, and hardware/software of each person, this can't be a bullet-point list saying "Do x, y, z and you'll be set," but rather is simply a collection of some of the information for the non-specialist that I found most helpful.I could do much more reading on the subject and find other ways to increase my internet privacy and security, but I've made so many changes in the last couple of days that I need to get used to them before going further.Of course, none of this will be news to those people who are already in-the-know and on top of this kind of thing, and some Fatwallet readers will be in that camp. Search engine Ixquick (www.ixquick.com), widely regarded as the world's most private search engine, has built a strong privacy reputation by storing no search data on its users. The company believes it has been singled out by the data retention proposal, and it has vowed to strongly oppose the measure becoming law.
"Since Google, Yahoo, and Bing already retain users' search data, this proposal is clearly aimed at Ixquick and our English-language subsidiary Startpage (www.startpage.com)," said Robert Beens, CEO of Ixquick. "We have worked hard to create a privacy-friendly search engine that embodies the spirit of EU Privacy Protections, in line with the strict recommendations of the EU Article 29 Data Protection Working Party. This Declaration is evidence that the left hand of the EU does not know what the right hand is doing."
Mr. Beens fears that if the measure becomes law, it will vastly undermine the privacy of over 500 million law-abiding EU citizens. Storing everyone's search data, rather than restricting surveillance to known or suspected offenders, would give the government access to a rich trove of political, medical, professional, and personal data on virtually every person in Europe. And critics say it will do little to stop child pornography.
"Sex offenders exchange files through underground networks. They don't find this stuff through search engines," said Alex Hanff of Privacy International, an advocacy group that is launching a campaign against the measure. "I spent eight years helping law enforcement track down online sex offenders and never once did we see a case where search engine data was useful."
Ixquick will join the public campaign started by Privacy International to stop the provisions of Written Declaration 29 from becoming law.

This is one of my first posts, so be gentle. I have been searching for a projector for awhile and came across this one today. Its a 720p LCD projector so you get your HD fix without
the pesky rainbow problems. The only downside I saw was a contrast ratio of only 1000:1 but these numbers don't mean what they used to. But there are a number of good reviews on the net and the next cheapest price for this projector is from Amazon for $680.00. Dell does charge tax in some states but they are offering free UPS ground shipping. Use Bing to make this deal even sweeter,search 'lcd monitor', Dell CashBack is at 10% right now.
