Direct TV removed some channels from my service. They sent a letter with an apology and an offer to reduce the monthly price by a few dollars. Those channels are the biggest reason i subscribed to them and there is no sense for me to continue. Upon calling to request cancellation they are refusing to do that without paying a huge fees. Can someone offer any suggestions.
I am thinking of writing to the BBB but they already have a horrible reputation there. Below is the clause in their customer agreement that says that they have the right to change any program and still charge a cancellation fees. Isnt this illegal by itself.....(d) Our Programming Changes. Just got off the phone with Citi Cards. Told CSR I was cancelling because I wasn't impressed with the rewards program. She offered me 4% additional on top of the base 1% for a total of 5%. Offer valid for 6 months.More details:

I sent an international wire transfer from my Bank of America account to Axis bank account in India. The amount was for $10,000. I own both the accounts (both outgoing as well as incoming account). I used JP Morgan Chase (as an intermidiary bank) since they have tie up with Axis Bank for all wire transfer from US. So, the wire was sent as a domestic wire from Bank of America to JP Morgan Chase with forwarding instructions to Axis Bank in India. This is not a new process to me and I have sent numerous wires this way atleast 10 times during last 2 years. All have been successful except this one.I sent this wire out on November 23 (a day before Thanksgiving). It has been more than six weeks now and I still have not received the money at Axis Bank. After tracing the wire transfer (by Bank of America), they realized that their wire transfer department messed up the details and as a result, the wire was stuck with JP Morgan Chase. Specifically, they did not send forwarding instructions to JP Morgan Chase. Since then, I have tried numerous times to either resend correct instructions to JP Morgan Chase to transfer money to Axis bank and also, cancelling the wire transfer entirely. None of this seems to work. The money is with Axis bank now and it is stuck with them. At this point, I am trying to get Axis bank to release the funds and credit my account in India. I am not really worried about my money (since I know sooner or later I will get it).However, I am wondering what course of action (if any) I should take with Bank of America since they messed up my wire transfer. The BoFA branch manager has been polite to me and helps me out all the time. She is the one who confessed to me that Bank of America really screwed up this transfer and it went wrong. I have lost bank interest for six weeks for $10000, and spent atleast 6-7 hours of my time tracking this.Any inputs? Sorry for the long post.

I received what is obviously a sleazy if not outright fraudulent notice in the mail, and I could use some advice from the FW community as to what to do next.The notice was from the "Internal Subscription Protection Service" regarding a subscription to a magazine (Zoo Books) and how it was about to be renewed. The notices says that unless I call, my account (either credit card or bank account) will be debited a one time fee of $49.95 on November 25, 2011.The thing is, I (actually my daughter) am not a current subscriber of this magazine and have in fact hasn't subscribed to that magazine for a number of years. So this is obviously a scam.Reading the fine print (which I will summarize), the stuff they are trying to pull is truly amazing:
- You authorize us to take the funds from the credit card or bank account on file
- While you are under no obligation to renew your subscription, failing to cancel your enrollment in this automatic subscription plan through one of the three methods described in section 1 by the bill by date will signify your acceptance of renewing your subscription. Cancellation after the bill by date will obligate you to pay for the annual subscription accepted.
- You have the right to cancel. However, cancelling after the bill by date will obligate you to purchase the entire annual subscription before the subscription took effect.
It appears they are asserting that by sending me this notice, I am agreeing to a contract unless I tell proactively tell them I don't want it. And, if I don't cancel it, I'm on the hook for the entire amount.
Yeah, right! I am not a lawyer, but I assume this is unenforceable if not downright illegal.I am not so concerned about them billing me (I am sure they don't have my bank account on file and even if they have my credit card, I'll dispute any charge), but what should I do next?

Specifically my question is about the companion certificate you get with the Platinum Sky Miles card. It says it can be used with 'most' Delta fares. I'm wondering are these things as difficult to use as Sky Miles or is it a straightforward process? There are a couple of other little benefits, a free checked bag per person and zone 2 priority boarding. I also get 5000 miles for upgrading from the regular sky miles card.The annual fee is $150 which sounds exorbitant but I would use the companion certificate every year for our ski trip if it's easy enough to use. I've had a regular AMEX gold card for 20 years and I'm thinking of cancelling that card and making the Platinum Sky Miles card my primarty AMEX if it makes sense.
I am thinking to close my Citibank Citigold account. There is absolutely no rational reason for maintaing $50,000 balance with Citi anymore. I did business with Citi for about 10+ years now. Citigold requite $50,000 minimum balance to avoid $30/month fee. What are the current/upcoming benifits of having/maintaining a Citigold reltionship? So, I was dead set on cancelling my Citi Thankyou Premier Credit Card because I took advantage of the 20,000 points it came with. I didn't want to get stuck with the Annual Fee(I don't know how much it is). I still have the rest of the year to cancel, but I was bored.They sent me to a retention department I'm guessing. The CSR offered me 10,000 points for not cancelling the card TODAY. I was like, "are you serious?". She was like, "oh yeah!". She stated that it will show up in 2 billing cycles. I'm holding my breath and my card til then. Upon receiving the points, bu-bye~~~!I'm sure others have similar experiences when they tried to cancel any credit card. I've been offered 2x points on all purchases for a whole year with the Citi Diamond Preferred Rewards card before, but this is new. If you're gonna cancel anyway, why not give it a try? I wouldn't have minded just cancelling the card but it earned me $100 in gift card.After I got off the phone with them, I called AMEX to cancel my AMEX Business Golf which I got $500 in gift card after spending $10,000 in 6 months. I'll try and keep this simple. I'm not a very experienced traveler so I bought a package through Expedia (airfare and hotel) for 7 nights in New York for what I thought was initially a great price. After purchasing the package, I did some research online (which I should of done before but I let my excitement get to me) and discovered Priceline's hotel bidding website. After reading the forums at various travel bidding websites, I'm pretty sure I can score a great deal (save $60 a night or more) at the same or a similar level hotel. So my question is, is it possible to cancel the hotel portion of my Expedia package but keep the airfare portion without incurring any penalties/fees? I've read the terms of my package and it seems like I can based on the following from Expedia's website:* Expedia packages can be canceled according to the cancellation rules of the individual components making up the packages (see below for the specific rules of the components of your packages).
* You may cancel your hotel without affecting your other travel item(s).
* We understand that sometimes plans fall through. We do not charge a cancel or change fee.Per the above, I believe I am entitled to cancel my hotel reservation and keep my airfare portion, but when I've called Expedia, I am told that my only options are to cancel the entire package, including the airfare and it is not possible to just cancel the hotel reservation. Am I misreading the above terms?Summary:

Just wondering if this is happening to anyone else. Over the last few months Discover has slashed the limits on my cards, even knocked one of them down to $500.This weekend I got a few letters from BOA, slashing limits, and cancelling one card. They even reduced one of my cards by $10K.
Thinking of cancelling my Sears Citi Mastercard after about 10yrs or so of use. I have never had a problem until the past year or so. It seems like everytime I try to make a purchase my order will get declined because it tripped something at my cards fraud department. This drives me absoulutly nuts. I've lost count of the the number of times this has happened. Just today, I tried to place a $40 order at Amazon, and they turned declined my purchase. I ended up having to use my Visa card. Just last month, I tried multiple times ordering some software from Adobe and the same thing happened again. I always end up having to call my card and chew someone out in their fraud department to get them to lift the stupid hold they placed so I can complete my purchase. So I FINALLY cashed in my 20,000 points for a $400 credit on a future car rental in July. The $400 credit appeared on my card the day after I placed the reservation. So... how much risk would there be cancelling my car rental (which I took mostly because it was convenient and was just over $400), getting a better deal somewhere else, and just keeping the $400? Think they'd convert it back to points? Just seems weird that I received the credit so far in advance.

I am tempted to get a us air premier world MasterCard. They offer for $89 30,000 miles to sign up plus other bonuses. I plan to travel with them again later this year and the free ticket is worth at least $500 to me if I can redeem miles for a flight. I don't usually fly us air so after the first year I would cancel to avoid the $89 yearly fee. My credit rating is 820. Would cancelling after a year plus the hard pull significantly impact my credit score?
I was auditing my bills and it turns out that I have gotten overcharged in June & July of 2010. The price of my basic cable + HSI before that was about $70 a month but in those two months spiked to $109 & $114, respectively. I got on the phone today expecting to be able to get a refund or future credit. No such luck. It was explained to me that during June 2010 my promo period had ended, so the cost went to the regular price. Somehow after July my monthly rate went to $54 a month downgrading to basic basic cable + HSI. It was explained to me that I am on a 12-month internet promotion period which will end on July 29, 2010 for $35, plus taxes, fees blah blah (so $54 total). She says after that, my rate will jump to only $10 (yeah like I'll believe that when I see it). I'll bet it jumps to almost double my total price.If Comcast thinks I'm going to let my promo period expire and wait for the upcoming price spike, they got another thing coming. I may live in an area that only has Frontier (no AT&T, Verizon, SureWest, etc) but Clear 4G has just moved in on Oct 2010 and I'm willing to give them a shot. I just hope it works w/ OOMA so I can maintain my VOIP. I'm going to give Clear 4G a shot. It couldn't be worst than Comcast. At least I can lock in for a long 2 year period w/o the price changing during that time.The amazing thing is that Comcast believes they are doing us a favor by giving us these promo periods (3, 6 or 12 months long), but these unpredictable price spikes afterwards can get CRAZY.

Hi all,Here's the situation. My father bought a new car. He doesn't speak English at all, so my brother was translating everything for him. Of course the dealer got the best of them and signed them up for bunch of stuff that's completely not necessary, ex. extended warranty, anti theft tracking by a satellite etc. Amongst other things he managed to get them to sign up for anti theft insurance from Nation Safe Drivers. Essentially the insurance policy protect the car in case it's stolen during the first 5 years of ownership. Apparently all they do is they etch out a phone number on the car's windows to help deter the thieves from stealing it. (LOL) It costs $1600. If the care does get stolen, the insurance company will reimburse upto $10,000 if we will buy the next car at the same dealership.After a week, I went to the dealership with my father. I talked to the finance guy, and explained that we didn't want the insurance policy and that he should cancel it. He agreed, but we decided to get back to him to still think about the insurance( upon the insistence of my father). Finally we decide that we don't want it. After we went back to the dealer, he blatantly denied agreeing to cancelling the insurance.So I decided to contact the insurance company myself to cancel the contract. I have already faxed them a request for a cancellation, as well as mailed a certified letter with the same request for cancellation.I talked with one of the reps, and she said that I would need to go to the dealer and he would have to cancel it on my behalf, because the insurance company will send a reimbursement check to the dealer and he would need to have it be debited to the total outstanding balance that is still with car.Here are my questions:Is the insurance company making a fool out of me for making be believe them that they need to send the reimbursement check to the dealership, which would then have it go to the lien holder?- If I am the policy holder, I should get the reimbursement check. I would then send it to the lien holder myself.
How should I proceed with the dealer?Should I send him a certified letter with a request for cancellation of the insurance policy as well? And have his refusal in writing?

This kind of topic may already exist, and I apologize in advance if it is.I was about to purchase a car from a web auction site and found out that the seller still owes money to a lien holder. The seller asked me to pay him/her by sending a check(certified check) to her/him so that he/she can pay off the balance, get the title, and do the transfer. It was out of state purchase, and I wasn't sure what to do, so I ended up cancelling the transaction. I just wanted to play safe. The site had the protection guarantee up to $50,000 for fraud, but still it had many fine printed exclusions.How would you pay for used cars among private parties safely, esp out of state cars where you have to travel quite a bit? This one has crushed ice, has the slim ice system (in the left door), so you get some space in the left door. It's almost 3 ft. larger inside, and has collapsible shelves for taller things in the main compartment. It also has the large slide-out drawer on the bottom that all the hot new models have.
I am hoping I am not out of place posting this problem under the finance forum, but am looking for some advice on an issue with a recent transaction on Sears.com. If nothing else maybe it will serve to alert others to a major problem in Sears service to its customers.Last week I placed an order via Sears.com for 3 items all showing instock:Item 1 - $24.99 (Wooden block set)

Total $50.32I normally do all my purchases on Amazon where I don't pay tax or shipping, but the items on Sears were $15 cheaper than buying the same on Amazon, so I decided to try Sears out, plus made the purchase through Discover card website to receive and additional future 10% Cash Back.I placed the order on Monday, received a confirmation a few minutes later and thought all was good. Tuesday morning I received an email from Sears.com saying part of my order was cancelled due to the item being out of stock and I was credited back as follows:Item 1 - $24.99

Total $28.01I called Sears within 1 hour of receiving the email and asked why my order was cancelled, long story short was told that they sell many 3rd party items and their inventory systems aren't always up to date (side note, item still shows instock days later). I told the lady I didn't want to pay $5 shipping for the 2 smaller items and wanted to cancel the order. She agreed and said I would receive an email showing the cancelation and refund in 24-48 hours. Great I thought, however 8 hours later I received an email with a tracking number saying my purchase was complete and I was charged $22.31I called Sears back and talked with a supervisor who told me basically to pound sand... Actually he told me that the associate never cancelled my order even though he saw notes in the system saying she was going to. (seems she forgot) I was told she would be reprammanded, but he could not help me further with the order. Even though the purchase was made through Sears.com it was fufilled by a third party and the supervisor said once that happens all matters regarding the order are out of their hand and I have to deal directly with the 3rd party and he gave me a 302-XXX-XXXX phone number to call them directly. I told the supervisor I was unhappy that I could not deal with Sears and that he would not make a problem they created right and requested a $5 refund for the shipping. The supervisor further refused and after much back and forth gave me the Sears corporate mailing address to file a written complaint.So now I'm pissed, Sears totally blew off a customer when they made a mistake with the order and now basically told me I have to waste a bunch of time with some 3rd party.At this point I should have ate the $5 and just said F%$K Sears, but against my gut, decided to contact the vendor. After a call and message to probably someones personal cell phone I got a hold of someone with the company. I was told I could refuse shipment of the package and pay a $5.99 restocking fee per their policy or if I open the package I can ship it back on my dime and pay a $5.99 restocking fee. It was also unclear and she couldn't tell me if I would be refunded the original shipping charge of $5.So now I have 2 options, refuse package and pay $5.99 restocking fee and possibly also lose original $5 shipping fee or just keep the package for the inflated shipping charge that I would never have agreed to.Aside from my obvious beefs with Sears, I am wondering if I have a case to refuse the package and report fraud to my credit card company. My thinking here is I agreed to make a purchase for 3 items for $50.32, not 2 items for $22.31. I never gave authorization to charge me $5 to ship these 2 items and it doesn't seem right that the company can just decide to charge me what they want for shipping when they modify the order by cancelling a part of it. I should have been given an option to cancel the order entirely or to have it sent free of shipping; or at bare minimum I should have been given a prorated shipping price.Now my main concern with this is that I have read that when returning shipping as a refusal, the seller can claim they never received it back and I have no way to prove it and this is something the credit card company may ask me for proof of.If anyone is still reading, what are your thoughts, is there anyway to get all my money back with as little future hastle as possible? Not sure if this is the right forum for this but I wanted to get your guys' opinions on the matter.A young guy came to my door yesterday and was telling me how he was participating for a chance to get a $1,000 to help himself get a career. He was going door to door and practicing talking in front of people and asked for donations to a local hospital. They were going to donate children's books to a children's hospital. I was in the giving mood and figured if I could give a charitable donation and help this kid out, it seems worth it. Well I am pretty sure it is a scam now. It was through NXCESS Sales. I wrote a check for $55 and tried cancelling it, but my bank told me it costs $33 to cancel the check and it takes 24 hours. So he could cash the check today, and I would be out $88 at this point. So I didn't cancel the check. But I am concerned about my bank info being on the check. Do you guys think it is necessary to cancel my checking account and get a new one? Do you think I could have any other fallout from my mistake? I feel so bad that I fell for this. Normally I am so cautious.

I justed book a 2 nights stay through Travelocity via their Top Secret hotels. Big mistake. I ended up with a hotel that was only $29 bucks a night but 15-20 miles away from the airport with no nearby/convenient access to public transportation. I called Travelocity and they would not budge b/c booking a top secret hotel is non refundable. I then called my credit card issuer, Chase, and they said I can file a dispute but I wouldn't likely lose in the dispute due to the non refundable clause of the agreement. What are my options here? I don't have access to a vehicle while I'm there and a taxi ride from the hotel to the airport is easily $25, which negates the savings by using the "Top secret hotel deal".
This isn't exactly a hot deal, but probably something good to know for those who are audble.com members. I just tried canceling my audble.com account and received a $20 credit just for not going through with the cancellation. On the page that asks the reason for canceling, I selected "I'm trying to lower expenses" and the following page offered the $20 credit, which showed up immediately in my account. Looks like you can use up the credit and still cancel but I decided to stay a member for a bit longer.

My FAQ for the Car Rental Thread, trying to cover more angles than the other one. This is the first draft, still subject to revisions as I think of them. In an effort to keep from having to repost the same info repeatedly, I suggest we point to this for all new requests that fail to show any homework. Hopefully, it'll become a sticky. In the works- a short list of safe, reliable codes.NOTE: this is NOT the correct thread to ask for deals on cars. Those should still go on the matrix thread.1) How to ask for help. When posting a request, be sure to give all the pertinent info: type of car you would prefer (and what you might settle for); dates and p/u times (along with how flexible you may be on this, and remember there isn't much of a grace period nowadays and that extra hour may cost a LOT) and WHERE you will be picking up and dropping off. Also, you MUST post a bare minimum of which codes and companies from the Matrix thread you have already tried (preferably something you can qualify for) and what the results were for each, including fees and taxes. Glance at the first page of the thread and thoroughly review the most recent 5-6 pages to see what's working well lately and what topics are under discussion This way, we don't re-create your work; your post may help someone else; and perhaps you will have learned something valuable doing your homework. Remember that this is all volunteer and it's just as much work for the old-timers to plug in the numbers as it is for the newbies. You must make an investment of time if you want to save money.-- pretty much like with everything else. 2) Flexibility. The more you have with your dates, times, and type of car you will accept, the better your deal power. Need a car from Tues to Thurs? Insisting on an SUV for that mountainous Florida excursion? There is little incentive to offer you a deal. It will cost them more to turn the car over than they will make renting to you. Unless you have saved up some reward points or days, your best bet for these cases may very well be Priceline or Hotwire. Refer to bidding educations sites like betterbidding, biddingfortravel, and tripducky to see what kinds of bids are being accepted for your approximate dates. Remember that if you use an opaque, there is a good chance you will lose the perks of your loyalty program (ie, Emerald Aisle, miles, free drivers, upgrades,etc) so that is one of the opportunity costs of the savings; and, of course, you don't get your money back if your plans don't work out, so don't lock yourself in too early.

A corollary to this is that there is no "best price" or even "average price" for any particular car or date or area. Which leads to the motto -- WHEN YOU SEE A GOOD DEAL, BOOK IT IMMEDIATELY. Why would you hesitate as long as no prepayment is necessary? Blink your eye and it could be gone- we see that happen over and over again on the matrix thread. Continue to hunt for a better deal, if you have the time and energy; and when you find one, book it FIRST and then cancel the old one. Cancelling is a courtesy and a CYA that should be extended so that others may still get deals on cars and so that the industry will allow us to continue to book without prepaying- a luxury in the travel biz that applies to no other venues.4) If you are going to use a code you that probably wasn't intended for your use ---say, State of FL Employee, or Red Cross, or Military personnel-- I suggest you don't, at least, not til you've exhausted other possibilities. This goes double if there is insurance included in the code . Hi there,Wife and I are currently going through the last steps of a mortgage refinance... which was actually not a pleasant experience towards the end, and perhaps most importantly I think we are completely overpaying our mortgage broker (which actually changed throughout the process, as the original broker had some family issues). I had money saved up, but, I didn't want to blow it all at once on her bills.
So I call ETrade and request a limit raise to $10k. I wait, and in a few days I get a letter in the mail from ETrade saying 'congrats, you are now approved for $10k limit'.
I go online and do the transfer.
A few days later, I get a letter in the mail from ETrade saying that they have closed my credit card account.I am supposing that I got the credit limit increase because I had more than $10k saved up in the bank and my Fico score was over 800 and it was the tail end of the 'golden years' of credit, but, is a company allowed to put you through the process of giving you an increase and then cancelling it if you actually try to use it?Things went WAY downhill because of it, and, well, for me to come here and type it at 1am almost a year later, I just need some closure from people I trust.Thanks Gang, you're the best.
